Keep Your Home Safe: Christmas Safety Tips

It’s at this time of year, with Christmas just around the corner, that burglary statistics typically rise. There are a number of things you can do to deter burglars and ensure that you and the contents of your home remain safe. In the latest blog post, we take a look at Christmas safety tips.

Deterrents

As they say, prevention is better than a cure, so consider implementing some simple deterrents to your home. Burglars will typically target homes with easy entry and exit routes, consequently, even small picket fences can act as deterrents.

Consider installing motion lighting to the outside of your home. Such lights will turn on when someone gets close to your home, causing attention to be drawn to the property. Remember, if hanging festive lighting around the outside of your home, choose battery operated lights, ensuring you don’t have to feed wires through the windows of your home, which could make them easier to open.

Christmas Safety Tips

At this time of year, we tend to fill our homes with new gadgets to give to loved ones. However, be sure to avoid advertising your new purchases to the rest of the world. When putting the packaging from new purchases in the bin, be sure to place them discreetly under other items of rubbish and only put your rubbish out the night before it is due to be collected. Otherwise, take your packaging straight to a recycling point.

It is much easier for a burglar to act if they know that you are away from home. If you plan to go away over the festive period, always try and get a trusted friend or family member to visit your home a few times whilst you are away. If you can, you may even consider asking a neighbour to park on your driveway, making it appear as though someone maybe home. Automatic lights also work particularly well for giving the impression that your home is occupied when it isn’t.
