What to Do If You’ve Been Burgled

Posted on 2nd November 2018 by Wilson Alarms

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Realising that your home has been burgled is an upsetting and unsettling ordeal that nobody wants to experience. Unfortunately, throughout the year, burglaries occur across the country, making it vital for homeowners to protect their home. So, here is what we recommend you do if you ever find yourself in that situation.

Don’t Touch Anything

As difficult as this might be, especially if you’ve come home or you’ve woken up to a burgled home, it is imperative you don’t touch anything. We know how tempting it can be, however, this can hinder any potential evidence left by the burglar.

Contact The Police

Ensure you report the burglary immediately and follow any advice they might provide. Although the police may not be able to come to you straight away, it can be comforting to know you’ve alerted the police. Additionally, you will also be provided with a reference number, which you will need to share with your insurer to begin the process of any home insurance claim.

Take Photographs

Although this may be difficult, taking photographs of the scene can be very useful and may be required by your insurance company too. If you aren’t able to do this yourself, it can be helpful to ask a close friend or relative to take them for you, without touching or moving anything.

Document Missing Belongings

Once you’ve been given the all-clear from the police, you can now begin to document what items are missing or damaged and figure out the best course of action for everything. If any debit or credit cards, passports or forms of ID  are missing, you will need to contact the relevant authorities to cancel them and request replacements. If any keys have gone missing, it would be best to change your locks as soon as possible.

Install Your Home Security Systems

At Wilson Alarm Systems, we provide a wide variety of home security systems to ensure the security of your home. Whether you are looking for CCTV cameras that provide 24-hour monitoring, access control systems or general intruder alarms, we can help.
